Glen Hansard Ends Studio Hiatus
I stumbled upon a notice on the website for the Irish rock band The Frames which mentioned that frontman Glen Hansard has begun recording material for a solo album that is slated for a 2012 release. This is welcome news, as Hansard has yet to release new material since 2009’s Swell Season record Strict Joy. Hansard, of course, has been busy the last few years. In his time since recording with Once costar Marketa Irglova, he’s taken both the Swell Season and The Frames on the road, recorded a song on Eddie Vedder’s Ukulele Songs, opened for Vedder’s 2011 tour, and joined Pearl Jam on stage for their 20th Anniversary concerts in Wisconsin.
Hansard has had a very diverse career that has taken off in many different directions over the last few years. In addition to acting in The Commitments, he’s successfully fronted The Frames – who have a place in the lineage of great Irish bands like U2, The Waterboys, and Snow Patrol. Since his role in the 2007 film Once, he formed the Swell Season with Irglova (who released her solo debut Anar this fall) and cut two albums for their collaboration.
It will be interesting to see where Hansard’s music leads to next year as he has veered from the rock style of The Frames towards more acoustic sounds with The Swell Season.
Here’s a clip of Hansard and The Frames from their nearly three-hour concert at Philadelphia’s Theater of the Living Arts last November:
