The Beach Boys To Release That’s Why God Made the Radio
I can’t put my finger on the reason, but I am oddly excited for Friday, when the living members of the classic lineup of The Beach Boys will officially release the initial part of their first new record since 1996, the single “That’s Why God Made The Radio.” The still-untitled record, which is due on June 5, will involve Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and founding guitar player David Marks (who first left the band in 1963).
If “That’s Why God Made The Radio” is any indication of how good the new record will be, The Beach Boys haven’t lost their touch in their time away from each other. The band was able to pen lyrics as only they can, invoking dreamy imagery with their singular harmonies. The song instantly put me in a car headed to a summertime Jersey shoreline, windows drawn down with a left arm dangling in the breeze.
That’s what The Beach Boys have done for so many decades and it’s glad to have them back together again.
The band kicked off their lengthy North American Tour last night in Tucson, Arizona, where they played a 42-song set. In addition to their new record, the band will also re-release Good Timin’: Live at Knebworth on May 29, a live album that captures the band’s last performance in the U.K. with Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson. Here is the stream of “That’s Why God Made the Radio”:
