Rock Aid Armenia: Rock Legends Lay Down Smoke On The Water

Here we have one of those fun things that happens when Google takes you somewhere that you didn’t intend to go: type in a search for Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and the interwebs produce Rock Aid Armenia. Inspired as a charity effort to aid victims of the 1988 Leninakan Earthquake, Rock Aid Armenia yielded an album, a video, and a series of singles that were compiled by rock luminaries such as Gilmour, Brian May (Queen), Roger Taylor (Queen), Roger Daltrey (The Who), Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company), Alex Lifeson (Rush), and Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), as well as Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore and John Lord from Deep Purple.
The group released covers of Led Zeppelin’s “Rock ‘n Roll,” Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” and Deep Purple’s “Smoke On The Water.” Check out the original mix of the group’s cover of “Smoke On The Water,” which needless to say, features lots of guitar:
